The 7th grade students have recently finished reading the novel Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton. A major theme discussed and read about in this novel was isolation and the absence of family. Much time was spent talking about the importance of family and the invaluable lessons that can be learned from one's family. One lesson discussed was communication during meal time. The benefits of simply sitting and discussing one's day away from outside distraction while enjoying some food.

On November 5, the 7th grade students participated in culminating activities that reiterate these lessons. Tricia Bradley, a project coordinator from Joseph's House in Camden, spoke with the 7th grade. The Joseph House works collaboratively with others to aid our homeless by offering a continuum of services including emergency shelter and access to supportive housing and comprehensive social services. She spoke to the students about poverty, homelessness, and what the reality is like for some. These realities were discussed in class as the main character had similar living conditions. The students then made two full boxes of PB&J sandwiches which will be their way of giving back. Almost 400 PB&J sandwiches were then donated to the Joseph house.
