Sherlyn receives Attales Sledgehammer at 9/23 Family Meeting

This year’s first Family Meeting was held on Friday, Sept. 23 in the Attales Gymnasium.

Family Meetings are periodic meetings where Attales staff and students gather as a family and discuss the good happening in the school.

On Friday, Attales Middle School students gathered on the bleachers to hear from Principal Burns about the school philosophy of “Feed the Good Wolf.”

During the meeting, students read aloud “shout outs” from their peers and teachers.

Principal Burns talked about pushing through one’s “comfort zone” to conquer your fears and accomplish your goals. This tied into the Family Time Friday held the week prior, where students from across grade levels as well as staff were put into groups and asked to write down their fears and goals for this year and beyond.

“Once you put something down on paper, it’s psychologically a way to committing to that goal,” Burns told the students and staff. “Sometimes when you put down that goal, and you think about what that goal is, it can be scary…If you always stay within that comfort zone, you actually don’t grow. It’s only when you push through things that are uncomfortable that you get better as a person.”

At the end of the meeting, Principal Burns handed out the Sledgehammer Award to Sherlyn, an eighth grade student, commending her for the growth that he has seen in her from last year and her efforts to make good choices.
